“Thank You for the wonderful tour of Burgundy. We had a great time and our day in Burgundy was the best day of our entire trip. Thanks also to the wonderful host winegrowers at each winery. We thoroughly enjoyed your tutorials and learning more about the wine growing, making and of course tasting. And Chef Pierre’s Bouef Bourguignon was one of the best meals we had in France”
    Reg and Diane Burroughs, USA

    Grand Premier Tour

On this special tour we take you to Domaines who produce some of Burgundy’s best-known Grand Cru and Premier Cru wines. Premier Cru represents just 10% and Grand Cru a minute 2% of the wines produced in Burgundy and the latter is often very difficult to taste on a day-to-day basis. We will visit three growers during the day and taste a mix of Premier Cru and Grand Cru red and white Burgundy plus some excellent Village wines – described by many as Burgundy’s best-kept secrets.

We drive through Burgundy’s famous wine villages and stop to take a close look at some of the regions best known vineyards; e.g. Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, Corton and Le Montrachet. Throughout the day we provide an informative commentary on Burgundy wine.

Also included is an excellent three-course lunch, with wine, in local restaurants famous for their typical Burgundy cuisine.

This tour is for a maximum of eight people to ensure a very personal wine tasting and guided commentary experience.

The price of our Grand Premier Tour is 235 Euro per person inclusive
    .

    Gourmet Grand Premier Tour

This is a tour for the foodies! We've combined our Grand Premier Tour (see above) where we taste some of Burgundy's top Premier Cru Appellations and Grand Cru with an exceptional lunch in Le Bistrot du Bord de l'eau at the Relais et Château Hostellerie Levernois (www.levernois.com). The Hostellerie, whose main restaurant has a Michelin star, is situated in wonderful parkland and we enjoy lunch around the log fire in winter and on the waterside terrace in summer. This exceptional one day tour combines superb wine tasting with exceptional food.

The price of our Gourmet Grand Premier Tour is 270 Euro per person.

    Vine to Wine Tour

This exceptional experience one-day tour takes you from the vine to the wine. We start the day in a Burgundy Domaine vineyard, alongside the winegrower, who will talk about the seasonal tasks that are the bedrock of the winegrowers work.

We uncork the bottle and taste the very wine, in the vineyard, produced by the vines surrounding us. A unique experience - tasting from the grape to the glass! We then drive to the winegrowers Domaine, to visit their cellar and taste a wider range of their wines.

Late morning we head to an ancient private cellar beneath a superb, small village restaurant to discover and taste a true Burgundy hidden secret – Crémant de Bourgogne. Burgundy produces an excellent sparkling wine made in exactly the same way, and using many of the same grape varieties, as Champagne. We taste different Crémants and the famous Burgundy aperitif, Kir Royale.

We then walk into the restaurant and enjoy a Burgundy three-course lunch, with wine. The menu choices include typical regional dishes such as Oeuf Meurette and Boeuf Bourguignon.

After lunch we head off through the vineyards for our final winegrower visit, where we will meet the grower, visit their cellars and taste a selection of their wines.

This tour combines walking in the vineyards, engaging with Burgundy winegrower characters, visiting ancient cellars and tasting wine made with heartfelt passion plus discovering the hidden secret Cremant and enjoying a typical Burgundy lunch.

The Vine to Wine tour is 240 Euro per person.

    Hidden Secrets Tour

There are approximately 4,500 winegrowers in Burgundy and the vast majority are small, independent family Domaines of around 6 hectares (20 acres). Burgundy has many “Hidden Secrets” and on this tour we take you to winegrowers and villages that are off the beaten track to growers who rarely receive visitors. These men and women are often described as the true characters of Burgundy, and make fabulous wine from tiny parcels of land in traditional ways.

We usually meet the winegrowers (and often their dogs too!) who tend the vines, make the wine, mature and sell it. This is great wine produced with heart-felt passion and rarely found outside of France.

On this one-day tour we will visit three of Burgundy’s “Hidden Secret” winegrowers and enjoy a traditional Burgundy lunch in a village restaurant serving dishes typical to the region. We will visit “Hidden Secret” winegrowers and areas, such as for example, the Hautes-Côtes, Côte Chalonnaise and small, family growers in the Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits. You will meet true Burgundy characters, visit charming cellars and taste amazing wines.

Our Hidden Secrets one-day tour is 210 Euro per person, inclusive of all the above.

“Thank you for the tour. It was a great start to our few days in Burgundy and wonderful to have your local knowledge. Domaine Marcillet was so personal and Nadine showed such passion for her wine. Does wine always taste better with a story!? I will tour with you again on my next visit.”
    Ian Wyatt, UK

    ExceptionElles Experience

ExceptionElles is the name of the small, select band of female proprietor winegrowers in Burgundy. Working alone, or with their husband, brother, sister or father they are a small but growing group of "ExceptionElle" talent!

New for 2012, we have developed a tour that takes guests to visit three ExceptionElles during the day. These ladies are exceptionally hard-working juggling family and wine on a daily basis. Their wines offer something different and they, in many cases, bring a "softer" touch to the winemaking.

We will meet the ExceptionElle in person, visit their cellars, learn about their winemaking style, and taste excellent wines from Burgundy's Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune. We will stop in the vineyards to get close to the vines. We will taste some of Burgundy's top Appellations as well as some amazing hidden secrets. On this one-day tour we will visit ExceptionElle winegrowers, and enjoy a wonderful three-course Burgundy lunch in an excellent village restaurant.

This one-day tour is 210 Euro per person and can be combined with any of our other tours for a two or three day visit.

    Vintage Occasion Tour

With Mon Millesime in Beaune, a specialist in old wines, we offer a sensational wine tasting experience combining our Grand Premier or Gourmet Grand Premier day with a tasting, in the early evening of some of Burgundy’s old vintages, back to the 1960s.

The day follows the format of our Grand Premier or Gourmet Grand Premier day (see above) until we arrive at Mon Millesime at 5.00/5.30pm.

Here we meet Philippe Renaud who will give us a short introduction before moving to an explanatory tasting starting with wines from the early 2000s or 1990s. Next we move on to the “middle ages” of early 1990s or 1980s before concluding with a Pièce de Resistance wine of around 30-40 years of age. We will taste some of Burgundy’s top Appellations. Philippe will explains what to look for when choosing, cellaring, ageing, serving and tasting an older wine.

We will return you to your accommodation around 7.30pm.

The Vintage Occasion tour is 350 Euro per person when combined with our Grand Premier day and 390 Euro per person when combined with our Gourmet Grand Premier day.
This tour can also be combined with any of our other day or multi-day tours. Our Vintage Occasion Tour is for a minimum of FOUR people booking together as a single group.

    Wine and Wheels two-day tour

The Exceptional Experience two-day tour is organised with our partners, Bourgogne Randonnees, the specialist bike touring company. It comprises one day on either our Classic or Grand Premier tour where we chauffeur you in our Land Rover Discovery and guide you through Burgundy and one day on a self-guided bike tour through the vineyards. Luxury and leisure!

The first day begins with us welcoming you at your accommodation in or near Beaune. We drive into the vineyards – some say it is like a wine list coming alive – and we describe the day ahead. Stopping in the vineyards to help you understand Burgundy better, we explain the basics of Burgundy – its wine growing areas, grape varieties and the appellation system. We explain the winemaking process, what is happening in the vineyards and wineries at the time of your visit, introduce you to the winegrowers and guide you through the tasting.

On a typical day we visit three family-owned Domaines in the Cote de Nuits, Cotes de Beaune and/or Cote Chalonnaise and taste around 20 red and white wines from the bottle and, if possible, barrel. We taste regional, village and premier cru and on our Grand Premier day, some Grand Cru.

Included is a three-course lunch with wine in a local village restaurant serving typical Burgundy dishes.

On the second day you will collect your bike from Bourgogne Randonnees in the heart of Beaune to begin your self-guided tour through the roads and paths of Burgundy’s vineyards. You can select from two pre-planned routes – north or south. Head north through the villages and vineyards of Savigny-Les-Beaune, Pernand Vergelesses, Aloxe-Corton and Ladoix-Serrigny. This 20km (12.5 miles) circuit is through wonderful countryside and includes a superb tasting lunch at Domaine Comte-Senard of six wines and an excellent Coq au Vin.

Or, head south for a 30km (18.5 miles) ride through Pommard, Volnay, Meursault to Puligny-Montrachet where you will enjoy a tasting lunch at Olivier Leflaive. You will also tour their cellar before lunch.

Both circuits include a map, route notes, local advice and suggested tasting stops and wine-tasting lunch on a fully equipped hybrid bike.

This two day tour can comprise either a one-day Classic Wine Tour and one-day Bike Tour at 285 Euro per person or one day Grand Premier tour and one day Bike Tour at 325 Euro per person.

Independent Winegrowers Wine Fair, Lille (Salon des Vins des Vignerons Indépendents)

"We enjoyed the weekend very much and very well organised. The wine fair was excellent especially with you walking us around. The wine tasting was great fun – so much enthusiasm from Ulrich and great stories from Jean-Luc. Excellent idea to have a private dinner. A good mix of guests and great company"
    David and Linda Bricknell, UK.

For the second year we are hosting a very special weekend alongside the largest Wine Fair in France, held in Lille, exclusively for the Independent Winegrowers. Our first weekend in November 2011 was a sell-out success and many guests have already put their name down for 2012! We limit the weekend to 20 people to make sure it is a highly personal, small group experience.

On the third weekend each November, Lille in northern France hosts the country’s largest Wine Fair devoted to the small, independent family winegrowers. Over 600 winegrowers take part and visitors can taste and buy wine from every wine area in France. We have joined with Domaine Ulrich Dujardin, one of our most popular winegrower visits in Burgundy, to host an exceptional experience weekend.

Ideal for guests from the UK and continental Europe who can drive easily to Liile, a gem of a city, to taste and buy fantastic wines at excellent prices.

The weekend starts on Friday evening, 16th November 2012 with an aperitif in a city centre hotel followed by a relaxing dinner. On Saturday morning we walk to the Grand Palais to join the throng of visitors. We will plan a “walk” around selected winegrowers from different regions using Ulrich Dujardin’s stand as a base. Taste Burgundy, Bordeaux, Alsace, Rhone, southern French, Champagne, Beaujolais, Loire throughout the day with a snack lunch in the hall. During the weekend we participate in a private tasting tutorial with a winegrower or sommelier

On Saturday evening we enjoy a gourmet dinner, hosted by Ulrich Dujardin and ourselves, in a wonderful restaurant in old Lille enjoying regional favourites.

The weekend can be flexible and builds in time for self-guided sightseeing and shopping in this magnificent and historic Flemish city.

Included in the price is dinner on Friday and Saturday (with winegrower Ulrich), tickets to the Wine Fair on Saturday and Sunday, private tutored tasting, our services as guides in and around the fair with translations as needed, fair guide and Lille information pack for the weekend. We will also recommend a good hotel in old Lille with parking and 15 minutes walk from the Grand Palais.

The Weekend includes all the above but excludes hotel, travel and meals other than dinners/lunch as stated above. This weekend is for a limited number of guests so please reserve your place early as we anticipate high demand!

Email david@burgundydiscovery.com for more information, pricing and reservations.

    Private Tours

It’s our tenth year of running Wine Tours and we focus on offering small group tours up to a maximum of eight people on any day. As specialists in visiting the small, independent family winegrowers typical of Burgundy these small groups offer a very personal experience.

Each year we receive a number of requests for a private tour for two or four people. While most, after appreciating the personal nature of our tours, are happy to join a small group we now offer the option of a private tour for two or four people based around our Gourmet Grand Premier tour as described above Click here.

This tour is ideal for a couple or four-some who want that extra-special care, attention and privacy of being just with us in our Land Rover Discovery.

Here are the thoughts of Robert Wemischner, the California pastry chef and food writer:

“My sincere thanks for a great wine day in Burgundy with the 20 students on my trip. It was truly a wonderfully, magical day, with informative and charming visits to wineries and the lunch in Meursault was perfect. The snow and fireplace at the first winery with the lovely hors d’oeuvres just set the stage for an enchanting visit. You were consummate and erudite hosts and we hope to do it again next year.”
